We all scream for ice cream
Trying the salt and pepper ice cream at MSF was extra motivation to make it to the Humphrey Slocombe mothership and I wasn’t disappointed. I had the secret breakfast (cornflakes and bourbon, definitely a breakfast of champions) with the chocolate fudgesicle. The two childhood tastes went great together.
Check out the bottom of the menu — foie gras ice cream!

Ok so LA isn’t all bad
This sounds delicious — Korean Taco Truck.
Cart sighting at 23rd and Mission
Just in case anyone is roaming the Mission this weekend drunk and hungry as is so often the case, I saw not one, but two carts kitty-corner from each other on the corner of 23rd and Mission the other night. It seems like carts have been far and few between lately (is there a crackdown going on?) so I thought if nothing else we should keep the blog updated with it’s namesakes’ locations.
I’m baaaack!
Ok, this post has nothing to do with cheap eats except that, well, I can eat them again. I’m off that weird, arbitrary diet. And back to my foodie, omnivorous self. So, if anyone can swing it this week – I’d be up for a cheap eat lunch!
Is it Thursday yet?
Dark indeed. Had we noticed that El Mango was eating the last of the wine-braised duck potpie – sold out by the time we ordered - we would have stolen a bite…or three. The remaining menu items though did us well. The mussels with Thai coconut curry broth and hidden gems of wok-seared pork belly lardons(!) were good to the point that we took turns unabashedly draining the last of the broth. The winner for us though was the whiskey-soaked eel/banana tempura over sesame and avocado brown rice…or was it the burrata with uni and olive oil crostini?? …or was it the freshly made salt and chili spiced chicharones the fine MSF folks graciously doled out to those of us milling about waiting and hoping the next name called would be ours!? All I can say is that Thursdays now hold a special place in my belly…err, heart. My thanks also to all the eel and sea urchin and pork bellies that were harmed in the making of this flipping amazing meal.
**Update** MSF is now open Saturdays too! To commemorate their first Saturday night they’re bringing back some classics. Most notably their PB&J…as in Berkshire Kurobuta Pork Belly and Jicama with Pickled Jalapeno and Cilantro Aioli on homemade Flatbread
No longer street
I finally made it to mission street food tonight. It’s not on the street anymore but instead they temporarily take over a run down chinese restaurant. First word of advice — get there early. I arrived at 5:40, twenty minutes before opening and the line was already 30 at least people deep. It was pretty dark in there so the photos didn’t come out but the food was delicious. I had the cauliflower soup, flatbread with king trumpet mushrooms, and the highlight of the night, the duck pot pie. For desert there was Humphry Slocombe salt and pepper ice cream. It’s tastes almost as crazy as it sounds but strangely, it works. All in all, definitely worth the relative cheap price of admission.
Lunch Genius…for under $11
Dennis outdid himself once again….this time in the form of yesterday’s lunch special at The Sentinel. This pic doesn’t capture the texture on those scallops, but they just weren’t around long enough for a retake

SEA SCALLOPS CEVICHE WITH GREEN CHILIES, CUCUMBERS AND FENNEL
Year of the Ox Indeed
In honor of the new year, they have a new dish at Incanto — a whole beef shank complete with tendon and marrow. It might be something to consider while we’re waiting for lamb neck to reappear on the menu.
